You have Something in Your Eye

Warriors Arise: January 20, 2024

Matthew 6:22 & 23 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

I understand the concept of these verses. There is something else needing clarity. I wonder why Jesus used the eye as a lamp? During His time a lamp would have held oil. Our eyes cannot hold oil. Lamps would have needed to be filled regularly or the lamp would not have been used for its designed purpose.

The lamp of the body is the eye. I need to continually fill my eyes with the purest oil. Automatically, my mind goes to another verse.

Pslam 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet

And a light to my path.

Then Jesus says our eye is the lamp of the body. A lamp must be regularly, if not daily filled with oil. The word of God is also referred to as oil. In order for us to see clearly and to be full of light, we need to be regularly, daily reading the word of God. When we read the word of God it is like putting oil in your lamp.

If I am looking at garbage, watching unwholesome movies, TV programs, magazines, or books, then I have no light in my eyes. I am putting mud, like darkness in them. Without light in my eyes, I cannot see. Without light, there is only darkness.

I can wonder why people do not see clearly or understand the truth of God, however, if they have no light, they are in darkness. When in darkness they can only go to the light but the light is not coming from within them. Those who are taking in God's word are seeing through the light. Situations come up in life and they can see clearly how to handle them, walk through them, bring peace, encouragement, and compassion. But those without the word, cannot see because they have not oil in their eyes. Therefore, they have no light by which to make decisions based upon truth.

My Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done here on earth as it is in heaven. You are my God and I desire Your Word to fill my eyes with oil. I pray I would receive Your word, comprehend and apply it to my life. I desire to have light to see and respond according to the truth. I want to extend love, kindness, compassion and grace. I want to have clear vision so my thoughts are clear and my actions are aligned with You. I will focus my eyes upon Your word and they will be filled with light in Jesus' name amen.
