Matthew 6:9-13 In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
How long is forever? Does forever have an end point in your mind? It seems we can struggle to comprehend forever. It get's misused all the time.
If you have been on a lengthy car trip with teenagers, you will hear, "How much longer? This is taking forever."
This glue will make anything stick forever.
We will be here forever.
These leftover are going to last forever.
This day is taking forever.
So, when we read God's word and He uses "forever" I'm not sure we have a solid understanding. Most of the time we use the word forever in the negative sense. So when we read Jesus' words, "For Yours is thekingodm and the power and the glory forever," do you embrace that concept as forever.
Forever: for all future time, for always, continually, lasting and permanent.
God's kingdom and power and glory are for all time.
God's kingdom and power and glory are for always.
God's kingdom and power and glory are continually.
God's kingdom and power and glory are lasting.
God's kingdom and power and glory are permanent.
As I typed each one statement, my understanding of forever grew. I stopped to take in each one. My comprehension of God's kingdom being forever grew. My concept of God's power being permanent expanded. My sense of awe in the glory of God being continually caused me to pause in majestic wonder.
When Jesus teaches the disciples how to pray and then I picture His eyes looking to the heavens to say the last part, "For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever." It's almost as if I can hear trumpets sound. They need to understand what Jesus is teaching them will stand forever.
I need to fully grasp what Jesus is saying. I do not need to be flippant with "forever". Jesus had come from heaven. He was there at the beginning of time. He knows there is no end, we will live forever with Him in heaven. He will be our King. The day is coming.
It can seem so far off. We can act like children tired of being in the car, "When are we going to get there?" As much as we would like to get there today, we can put our trust in the fact that one day we will arrive. One day we will be living in heaven with the Father. We can believe forever will come.
My Father in heaven. Hallowed be Your name. I trust You. I trust Your timing. I trust what You say You are going to do, You will do. I trust I will be with You today and forever. Your kingdom come in love, haling, deliverance, courage, boldness, peace and joy. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give me today my daily bread. Forgive my debts. I for give my debtors. Lead me not into temptation but deliver me form the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever in Jesus' name amen.
