Daniel 5:14-16 (NKJV) I have heard of you, that the Spirit of God is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. 15 Now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing and make known to me its interpretation, but they could not give the interpretation of the thing. 16 And I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations and explain enigmas. Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

To which Daniel says the king may keep his gifts. He is not being rude but knowing he didn't need enticed or paid to do what the king was asking of him. He knew God was asking something bigger of Daniel. God needed Daniel to trust Him, seek exactly what He had written and precisely what it said. Daniel knew this situation couldn't be a good one. He knew the enigma was from God. He knew what had happened at the feast with the worshipping of gold and silver etc. He knew Belshazzar had acted blasphemous toward God as they used the vessels from His temple.

Daniel spoke to the king because God positioned him there at that very moment. Daniel was a man who honored God above all else. He didn't need the king to entice him to tell the truth because Daniel couldn't lie. He would not dishonor God. Daniel was a man of great integrity. There was more at stack.

Later on in the book of Daniel you learn that he is petitioning God for the release of his people to return to Jerusalem, to their homeland. Daniel would not do anything before this pagan king, Belshazzar, to jeopardize God keeping His people in Babylon longer than the foretold 70 year sentence. When the 70 years is up, Daniel petitioned God to honor His word, for His people to be freed to return to Jerusalem.

No matter what the king would do to him, Daniel had to tell the truth. Daniel starts with a family lesson about Nebuchadnezzar and his experience with God. He is trying to remind Belshazzar God has already visited his family and dealt with arrogance before. The history lesson doesn't seem to affect Belshazzar. He is unmoved.

Then Daniel brings up Belshazzar's blasphemous action from earlier in the evening during the feast. Summoning the vessels to be brought from God's temple that were taken when Nebuchadnezzar seized Jerusalem, to be brought to him. Then to make matter worse, they drank out of them, instead of worshipping God for whom they were made, Belshazzar led them in worshipping the gods of gold and silver, bronze and iron, and wood and stone. Belshazzar is still unmoved.

Daniel 5:24-28 (NKJV) Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.25 “And this is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. 26 This is the interpretation of each word. Mene: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; 27 Tekel: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; 28 Peres: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.”

Daniel goes on. He explains the enigma written on the wall by the finger of God, and still Belshazzar is unmoved. My mind literally hurts thinking of this man's arrogance. How can he be so hardheaded that the facts can't penetrate his brain? How can he be so heartless that he doesn't repent for misusing the vessels dedicated to God? How can he be so ignorant that he doesn't know this is his last chance? He will not get another chance to repent.

Galatians 6:7 (NKJV) Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

Daniel did what the king asked and the king did what he promised.

Daniel 5:29 (NKJV) Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold around his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

The king is unmoved by Daniel's history lesson, rebuke, and the interpretation of God's handwriting on the wall. He seems to forget that Daniel didn't want the reward. It is as if you can hear him say, "Well, it that all it is." Then turn to command them to reward Daniel. I can't even imagine Daniel's face when Belshazzar responded by rewarding Daniel. What could Daniel do? He had said everything God sent him to say and still the kind is unmoved.

Father, this had to be so difficult for Daniel. I do not like to be in those difficult positions where I have to be so brutally honest with people. My heart wrenches inside of me as I share. I hope with everything I have that they will hear what You are saying to them. I can only do what You have instructed me to do and say what you have led me to say. I have to them trust to You, step back and hope they will surrender to You their heart, their mind and all of their being. I pray for Your Spirit to move among the people of America. I pray each one will know Your love and surrender to You. I pray for government officials to submit their will to Yours and seek You for wisdom. I pray for revival to flood our land. I pray for a turning of hearts to be softened by Your love and minds to receive the truth. I pray for a humbling of our own self-righteousness and a lifting up the righteousness of Christ. I ask for You to move the unmovable. I ask for You to give a chance to the arrogant, the hardhearted, and the self-righteous, a chance to see the truth, submit their ways to You, and walk in the righteousness and wisdom of Christ in Jesus' name amen.
