John 9:18-25 (NKJV) But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight. 19 And they asked them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but by what means he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” 24 So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, “Give God the glory! We know that this Man is a sinner.” 25 He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”

Parenting is a tough, challenging, exhausting responsibility filled with joys, heartbreaks, accomplishments, and celebrations. These parents are very wise. They can only answer what they know. They know this is their son. They know he was born blind to them. There is no record of them being with their son when Jesus touched his eyes with the clay and spit. There is no record of them being at the pool of Siloam. They are really in a difficult place. Don't you think they would want to stand up for their son? However, if they were to say something, it would not be true, because they were not there. Their son is old enough to answer for himself and he has already answered the questions asked of him.

I wonder if he heard the conversation Jesus and His disciples were having prior to his healing.

John 9:1-5 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. 4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

The Pharisees are commanding the man to "give God the glory" and Jesus said the man's healing comes so "that the works of God should be revealed in him." There was no question in this man's mind who would get the glory. But the Pharisees just had to speak more than was necessary. They had to add the little jab, the barb, "We know that this Man is a sinner." The man before them, the one who had been touched by God couldn't leave that alone. It was as if they challenged him to correct them. He has been touched by God and the transformation inside of him is incredible. Think of most blind people are they bold? They may not be meek, but I do not generally hear them speak assertively. This man who had been touched by Jesus wouldn't have the very man who has touched him maligned. He was not going to allow them to call this Man a sinner. He sticks to the facts of what happened and matter-of-factly thinks they should speak for themselves. He felt the touch, he received the anointing, and he followed the command that led him to be healed.

As a believer:

  • Do you stick to the facts of what God has done in your life?

  • Do you remember the touch of God upon Your life?

  • Do you remember God anointing You?

  • Do you remember God commissioning you, sending you out like he sent the blind man to the pool of Siloam?

Father, Your touch upon my life, one would think I could never forget it. But there are times when I am overwhelmed by the pressures of the world, life, and responsibilities. I have to position myself in Your presence to remember Your touch. In Your presence, I remember the anointing You placed upon me and the Words You spoke into me. You remind me of my calling and renew my heart to keep focused on what You have for me to do. When people blame You for the bad in the world, I remember the good You have done. What they say is inaccurate just like the Pharisees said of Jesus. He never sinned. He was not a sinner. He took my sin upon Him and made me clean. I will remember what you have done to heal me and make me whole. I will remember how You sought me out and restored me to my calling. I will declare the goodness of all You have done and watch for what You are doing. Your love is amazing and You continue to touch people with Your love and restore their body, soul and spirit. I will magnify the Lord my God in Jesus' name amen.
