Matthew 5:43-44b “You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you,
Bless those who curse you...that is not a natural thing. We may bless them alright, but it isn't with a pure heart. That "blessing" is more like a curse or some might actually be cursing and cussing. Not only are we to love our enemies, but we are bless those who curse us. What does that even mean?
I guess we aren't supposed to pray it back upon them, for instance, "God, you have heard what they said. They are cursing me! This isn't right! So, in the name of Jesus, I pray You would turn that curse upon them 10 times worse!"
Nope, I am not thinking that is what Jesus is saying. He truly wants us to turn the curse around with the power of blessing. How can we do that? It is NOT easy. It is difficult to take the sting out of our words when we have felt the sting of their words. It is difficult to say something nice, let alone have to bless them.
I thought I was doing good, if I kept my mouth shut. It seems like the blessing is elevating them when they have already taken the place of thinking they are superior. Why would I want to bless them when they are such a jerk? Maybe the only way to change a jerk is to speak a blessing into their life. They may be so ingrained into spewing curses, they have no idea how to speak otherwise. It's kind of like someone who cusses every other word. They wouldn't have anything to say if they didn't cuss.
Just because they have taken the place of seeming to be superior doesn't mean that they aren't speaking from within a pit. Those who speak curses are not above you, they are below you. They are trying to pull you into the pit so they can use you to step on. In their mind, they think that stepping on you will get them out of the pit.
The problem; their curses only makes the walls of their pit taller and you aren't going to jump in the pit with them.
The hope; if we are able to tap into what Jesus is saying, then a couple of things can happen.
1. Their curse does not land upon us.
2. They have the opportunity to climb out of their pit.
Father, I ask for You to teach me how to turn their curse into a blessing. I pray I can speak the blessing into my own life. I also ask to be able to know how to speak a blessing to the one who tried to curse me. I am thankful for Your Word, "a curse without a cause does not come to rest." Thank You for calling me Your own. Thank You for creating me to be a blessing. I will bless others. I will speak blessing upon others. I ask for You to give me courage to speak a blessing to those who desire to do evil toward me, who speak a curse over me. I ask will use my words to bless them in Jesus' name amen.
