Warriors Arise: April 8, 2022

Matthew 15:21-23 (NKJV) Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” 23 But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.”
This Canaanite woman had a big ask. Not that Jesus couldn't do it. She had heard. That is why she is there. That is why she traveled to find Him. She knew He could deliver her daughter from the demons that possessed her. However, she was not an Israelite. Jesus was sent to the lost sheep of Israel. The disciples wanted Jesus to send this woman away. Jesus doesn't seem to be doing anything. He continues. Why won't Jesus send her away as the disciples have asked?
The disciples have asked Jesus a question. Obviously, they are tired of this woman calling after them and pressing in to get to Jesus. But He does nothing. Why? Why does Jesus do nothing? In their eyes, He obviously isn't going to give her the time of day. He is not going to address her nor allow her to have an audience with Him. It isn't that she is a woman; it is that He hasn't seen or heard what His Father wants to do.
The Father is about to put this woman on display, because He sees her heart. It is pure and she is tenacious. This woman will not give up. She knows what Jesus can do. She knows He has the authority to free her daughter from the demons.
Matthew 8:16-17 (NKJV) When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses.”
If this Canaanite woman has heard the report of what Jesus did in Matthew 8 then we know why she is so persistent in Matthew 15. She had heard of this Jesus. Maybe people who saw what Jesus did came and told her. She knew he delivered all way back in chapter 8. She watched Him. She knew nothing had changed. He was still healing everyone who came. Maybe her friends who told her of this Jesus had to press in, maybe they had to contend but she was not going to be deterred.
What if Jesus had sent her away as the disciples had urged? Then Scripture would not be able to say, He healed all who were brought to Him. In the moment the disciples were bothered. This woman would not stop and if Jesus was going to do something He would have done it. They had not seen Jesus ignore someone before. But it seemed like He had not intention of even speaking to this woman. It is odd. It seems as if Jesus still will not even look at the woman. It is as if He is talking to the disciples and she is close enough to hear the conversation.
Matthew 15:23-25 (NKJV) But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.” 24 But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”
She has heard this conversation between the disciples and Jesus. She knows the disciples want her to go. She has heard that they want Jesus to tell her to go. What would you have done. Jesus has not said a word to you and His disciples don't want you around.
I am intrigued by this woman because in the midst of knowing they don't know what to do with her, she continues to press in. She positions herself for Jesus and worships Him. She wants Him to look at her. She wants to acknowledges who He is by calling Him, Lord. She knows no one else can help her but she is going to petition Jesus for something out of timing. Just like Jesus' mother.
Remember Jesus' first miracle? Water into wine at the wedding feast. Jesus is with His friends. His mother comes to Him and tells Him the situation. He tells His mother, "Woman, it is not my time." She tells the servants to do whatever He says and the first miracle becomes reality. Now, here is the Canaanite woman. It is not time for Jesus to save the world. That isn't supposed to happen until after He conquers hell and death. But this woman will petition Him. She knows who He is.
Father, there are too many times I have heard testimonies of the miracles You have done in the lives of others even though i celebrate with them, I don't really believe they are for me. I want the tenacity to know You are love; therefore, when I come to You I will remain and worship You. I follow You because I know Who You are and I know what You can do. I know Your love will not be withheld from me forever. I give up way too easily. Please forgive me. I made it all about me instead of making it all about You. I will worship You because of who You are. I will worship You because Your love will be demonstrated in my life when the Father says it is time in Jesus' name amen.
