Matthew 4:10 (NKJV) Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
Dang! Jesus just put it out there. There was little time to be messing around like this. The devil may still be wondering who Jesus is, but there is no question, Jesus knew this was the devil.
I picture the devil's head snap toward Jesus when He spokes with such authority and called him by his name, Satan. Notice the exclamation point. Jesus is done with this and He was not going to be insulted anymore. He had a mission to be fulfilled and He wasn't going to waste any more time of the devil.
I do not believe Jesus is shouting, I believe He is speaking with His God-given authority. There is s difference between shouting and speaking firmly with authority. One commands respect and obedience while the other can be belittling and abusive. His voice was firm and strong, it was enough to turn the tables and give the devil another clue as to who he was speaking with. We all have had someone in our life, whether it be a parent, coach, teacher, or attendant, who has called you using their authority. If it is a parent they might have used your first, middle and last name. You straighten up and you are going to do one of two things:
You will turn slowly to look at them because you are hoping they are not as upset with you as they sound.
Or Your neck will snap toward them as you give them your full attention.
Up until this point, Satan had been referred to as the devil. But now, Jesus addressed him and uses his name, "Away from me, Satan!" I totally think he did a double take and was about to say something, "How dare you speak to me like that!" But, then saw the fire in His eyes and he moved on.
Have you identified the devil messing with you?
Have you spoke to him using his name?
Have you spoked with the authority God has given you?
Have you told him, "Away from me, Satan!"
You and I have the authority because of Christ is us to speak to the devil and tell him to go. We are ambassadors of the kingdom of heaven. We are a royal priesthood. We are God's very own people. We are His children. He carry our Father's favor. When we know who's we are and who we are, we can step into the authority give to us.
Father, thank You for Jesus' demonstration of authority over the devil. I am in awe that You would empower me to speak with such authority. I ask for awareness to recognize when the devil is emption me and telling me lies. I pray I would rise up with Scripture to silence him. I also pray I would walk in the authority You have given me and tell Satan to go away. You are wonderful and You love for me is beyond my comprehension. I pray for insight, and boldness to defeat the devil. I pray I would walk in the authority You have given me in Jesus' name amen.
