Matthew 5:31 “Furthermore...

There are certain words in the Bible that should cause us to pay attention. When the Bible was written there were no subtitles, chapters, or verses. When we see, "furthermore," we have to allow our mind to understand Jesus is still talking about the previous subject even though someone put a subtitle and listed a new verse. By saying, "Furthermore," He is about to drive the point home.
He is leading us away from what will bring us destruction. He is wanting us to stop before we cause destruction in our life. He wants us to lift our eyes from looking upon another in a lustful ways. He wants us to divert our eyes. It isn't that He wants ut o pluck our eyes. However, He knows where it will lead if we continue to look. It is not that you are better without the eye. It is that you are better because you didn't bring destruction to your marriage.
When we chose not to divert our eyes, our mind begins to dwell in a lustful way upon another person that isn't our spouse. When we allow our mind to entertain lustful thoughts toward another it can reach the point where we begin to act upon those thoughts.
The lies we tell ourself will to make it seem permissible are the lies that will lead us to destruction. The Holy Spirit tries to call us turn our eyes away, to get our mind to think on good things that are good, noble and just (Philippians 4:7-8). He tries to interrupt our thoughts and stop us from acting upon them.
We want to believe we can handle the looking, entertaining thoughts the lead to destruction without anything happening. The problem, we think nothing happened but our mind was turned away from our spouse; therefore, so was our heart. Even though we didn't act upon it, there will be an unspoken breach in your marriage.
When Jesus says, "Furthermore," He isn't done. Read before and after the "furthermore." He is leading us to a truth that if you will receive will lead us away from destruction.
Father, I want to be receive the fullness of what Jesus is saying in this passage. I pray for my marriage to be protected and strengthened because my eyes for my souse and my spouses eye's are only for me. I pray for any breach to be cleansed and restored to wholeness in our love for each other. I pray for the Holy Spirit to be quick to speak for me to keep my eyes to myself. I pray my mind will not entertain lustful thoughts of another. I will not be found wanting another because I have been given a gift. I will value, honor and love my spouse. I will heed the warning and keep my eyes on You in Jesus' name amen.
