Identify the False Prophet

Warriors Arise: February 22, 2024

Matthew 7:15a “Beware of false prophets...

This can be a touchy subject. Keep in mind, Jesus is talking, He, who is Truth and a prophet, is cautioning the people to beware of false prophets. Later, He is going to give a warning because He does not want them to be led like sheep to the slaughter. He wants them to be able to recognize a false prophet.

So what does the Bible say about a false prophet?

Deuteronomy 13:1-4 “If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, ‘Let us go after other gods’—which you have not known—’and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him.

A false prophet is one who uses the sign or the dreams he was given to get you and I to pursue after other gods and serve them.

If someone declares a sign will be given and it happens that does not make them a false prophet. They are a false prophet when they use that to get you to follow after others gods. If someone shares a dream and it comes to pass, this is not a false prophet. If they use the reality of the dream coming to pass to lead others away from God to serve other gods, then they are a false prophet.

Dreaming dreams and having them come to pass does not make one a false prophet. Even if they get the interpretation wrong, they are not a false prophet. They are a false prophet if they use their dream to persuade the people to reject God and follow after other gods.

Declaring a sign will happen and then it does, doesn't make someone a false prophet. Even if they get the timing of the sign wrong, they are not a false prophet. They are a false prophet if they use the sign that was given to them to persuade the people to reject God and follow after other gods.

Joel 2:28-32

“And it shall come to pass afterward

That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;

Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

Your old men shall dream dreams,

Your young men shall see visions.

And also on My menservants and on My maidservants

I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

“And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:

Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.

The sun shall be turned into darkness,

And the moon into blood,

Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD.

And it shall come to pass

That whoever calls on the name of the LORD

Shall be saved.

There is going to be an increase in dreams. These will be give by Holy Spirit. They will be to draw people to God not to other gods. Those who use the dreams to draw people to God are a prophet of the Lord. Those who use the dreams to draw people to other gods, are false prophets.

My Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give me wisdom and discernment. Give me boldness to share the dreams You have given me. Let me tell of them to draw people to You, that they might call upon the Lord their God and be saved in Jesus' Name, amen.
