Matthew 3:10 (NKJV) And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
John the Baptist says so much in just a few verses. He had one message and shouted it out as fast as a wide-open fire hydrant shoots water! He is speaking of terms only God could reveal to Him. Later in Jesus' ministry, in the book of John, chapter fifteen, He will share a more extensive understanding and direction of what John the Baptist is saying here. John the Baptist is sharing spiritual truths others have a difficult time understanding. Even when Jesus taught, people walked away, and they knew He spoke with the authority from God; but their mind had difficulty comprehending what He shared from the Father. When we read what John the Baptist said to the people it is like drinking from a fire hydrant. Remember, the rest of the New Testament hasn't happened. You and I know what the Bible says. We believe What Jesus did for us through His life, death and resurrection, but what John the Baptist is sharing is not tangible and seems scattered. He desperate wanted people to understand the awesomeness of God to forgive them of their sins. He wanted them to know, they could be clean if they will repented. He wanted them to know they are no longer in bondage but free. He wanted them to know their heritage or bloodline doesn't matter. He wanted them to know, the only thing that matters is whether they believe God, repent of their sin, are baptized and bear good fruit for the kingdom of God.
Matthew 3:5-10 (NKJV) Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him 6 and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, 9 and do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 10 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
John is seeing into the future. This is going to happen. There is a hell and those who are not bearing fruit for the kingdom of God will be condemned to the hell. It will happen. John, the beloved disciple, who wrote the Gospel John and the book of Revelation, was given a more in-depth understanding of what will happen when this world passed away.
John knows the division is already happening. The people saw a division in the temple through the Pharisees and Sadducees over the interpretation of Scripture. John saw the division happening over those who would believe in the coming of the Messiah and those who would not. It is more important to believe in Christ Jesus, the Messiah, than to have your doctrine perfected. It is important to know the truth in the Word of God, but it begins and ends with Jesus. Greater understanding comes through personal relationship with God, because we have received Jesus as our Savior and Lord, live to bring glory and honor to God, and are led by Holy Spirit.
John, in just a few sentences tries to pour out what he knows is coming. There will be a division. Yes, they are a chosen people. But if the chosen people do not believe God has sent His Son, acknowledge His life, death and resurrection, confess and repent for their sins; then they will not be in God's family. They will be cut off and thrown into the fire.
Father, I pray we would each be clear in the message of Your Word. I pray we would speak clearly and intentionally sharing Your love with others. I pray for an urgency to come upon Your people to share of Jesus, Your love and the empowerment they can have through the Holy Spirit. I pray for those who here to receive Jesus as their Savior and Lord. I pray each would repent, be baptized and align their decisions with the call You have on their life. You are amazing in all of Your ways and Your love is astounding. Thank You for removing our sins and restoring us to Your calling upon our life in Jesus' name amen.
