Matthew 4:1-4 (NKJV) Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
The enemy finally arrives. Let's keep in mind that the Spirit and Jesus knew the enemy was coming. We know this because of verse one, "Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil." It was not a surprise to the Spirit nor Jesus that the tempter finally found them. I wonder which one spotted him first.
Jesus in feeling the pain, "How long have we been out here? I'm hungry."
Holy Spirit responds, "Well, you're going to have to wait. Look over there."
"He is finally here," responds Jesus, "Well, let's get this over with, I'm hungry."
They weren't looking for the devil. They were positioned for him to find them. Jesus and the Holy Spirit were ready to get the party started. By the party, I am referring to Jesus stepping into ministry and fulfilling His purpose on the crosse and rising from the grave. Jesus needed to get familiar with how to defeat the devil here on earth. It would be a different battle. It would be different than when they fought in heaven. In heaven, Jesus defeated Lucifer, and he was thrown down to earth. Jesus would not be fighting the devil as God, one of the Trinity. He would be fighting the devil as a man tapping into God's power.
God has given you and I the same ability, the same possibility. You and I can defeat the devil as well. It is a possibility because we have a choice to use God's power or not. We can choose not to use God's power but that doesn't negate our ability to defeat the devil. It means we didn't take the opportunity to make the possibility a reality. How many times have we been empowered by God and we don't apply it to a situation we are going through in our life. We choose not to tap into His power and draw strength from Him to defeat the devil. God has given us the same ability as Jesus was given. We have the same Spirit as Jesus was given. We were not given a junior Holy Spirit. Therefore, You and I can defeat the enemy. Jesus was 100% human operating with the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. You and I are 100% human and we are given the Holy Spirit to defeat the enemy.
Father, I certainly do not sit around waiting for the enemy to come. But when he does, I want to remember that as Jesus defeated the enemy, so can I. I pray I would embrace the power of the Holy Spirit and take a stand against the enemy. I will not be concerned when the enemy comes. I will be communing with You. I will be ready. I will know Your Word. I will use it. I will not be afraid of the devil. I will honor Jesus by operating in the power of the Holy Spirit to defeat the enemy is Jesus' name amen.
