Luke 2:6-7 (NKJV) So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger

My first day with my first child is a blur. The doctors have done their part, the baby is safely here. Then the nutritionist comes by so you know what to eat and not eat when you are nursing. The nursing teacher comes by to make sure the baby is latching on and is getting some milk (colostrum). They bring the baby in and then later without warning come whisk the baby away. I had enough rest and my husband was practically pacing the room, because he didn't have anything to do. We were ready to have our baby with us. I remember sleeping and hearing my daughter sleep so peacefully. She was content and seemed to coo when she slept. It was a very precious sound.

Mary probably felt very similar. She wanted time with her new baby. She had visitors from the shepherds and I would imagine they didn't all come at one time, but straggled in. She might have been waiting up to see if the angels would come visit them. What would their next instructions be? Exhausted from delivery and ready to nurture her new baby she and Joseph were ready to have Jesus all to themselves. They were ready to stop bouncing donkey rides and sleeping out in the open. Mary had ridden with Jesus in her womb on probably the roughest ride for the last 100 miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Rocky terrain, chilly nights and there wasn't a fast food restaurant every 20 miles. How did she survive! We have our cravings and I am sure Mary did not have access to any of those. They had survived so many things and now He is here. Even though situations were rough and circumstances surrounding their betrothal were questioned by everyone in Galilee, He is here.

The stable was cleaned up. Joseph had done everything he knew to do. The needs of Mary and the baby were his top priority. His mind still wrapping around how human this baby looked. He was God's Son. What had he expected the baby to look like? Would He have normal needs? What would Joseph be able to teach Him? Would Mary allow Joseph to hold the baby and parent together or would this be her thing with God? What would Joseph's role be in the life of God's Son? All the questions that must have been rolling around in his head. Not that Joseph knew any of the answers, but when Mary asked him to hold Jesus for the first time all would be settled within him. They seemed to have three things they knew: He is here. God will lead us. We will follow God.

How simple. Jesus is here. God will lead us. We will follow God.

Father, why do I make it so complicated? Jesus is here. You will lead me. I will follow You. That's it. Jesus is here. There is no question in my mind. Jesus came as a baby and He is Emmanuel, God with us. You will lead me. I ask for my eyes to see where You are at work and for my heart to be purposed to join You, when I see You. I ask for my ears to be open so I follow where You are saying to go. You are my God and I will follow You in Jesus' name amen.
