Matthew 5:17-20 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Is that heavy, or what? It seems heavy on my mind until I allow it to unfold. The people didn't want to abide by the words of the prophets. They had chosen to disregard what the prophets had said. It is what led to their montage over and over throughout history. Then the Pharisees and Sadducees had made hundreds of more laws. It seemed incredibly heavy. How could they ever do enough right to earn favor from God?

This passage actually brings more hope not bondage. Jesus wasn't coming to write new laws. He was there to fulfill them. The reason the laws felt so heavy is because they realized they would not be able to fulfill them. They couldn't do enough right in order to receive the blessing.

We understand what Jesus was saying because we see the Word of God in its entirety. God continues to reveals His Word to us. Jesus was speaking to what the Prophets had spoken in regard to His coming. The Messiah would bring Salvation. He would not save them from the calamity of this earth but He would save them from hell in eternity. All would have the opportunity of freedom because Christ came to fulfill the Word of God and the Laws of the Prophets. Hope lives in Jesus. Jesus lives in us.

Father, I am thankful for Your Son coming to earth to be the fulfillment of the Law. I am grateful for His sacrifice and love for me. I cannot fulfill the law. I have sinned and need one who can stand in my place. Jesus not only stood in my place but He took my punishment and died in my place. He is the fulfillment of the law. My actions would never be enough. I am grateful for my Savior and honor Him with my life in Jesus' name amen.
