Daniel 5:13-16 (NKJV) Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king spoke, and said to Daniel, “Are you that Daniel who is one of the captives from Judah, whom my father the king brought from Judah? 14 I have heard of you, that the Spirit of God is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. 15 Now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing and make known to me its interpretation, but they could not give the interpretation of the thing. 16 And I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations and explain enigmas. Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

We have a book the kids love to have me read. It is called, “Have you heard?” said the bird. It is about a bird who hears there is a new baby on the farm. The bird flutters up a flurry of commotion trying to find which of the farm animal mothers has a new baby. After asking each one and there not being a new baby, the bird knows what she has heard. There is a new baby on the farm. Then the baby squeals and all the animals crowd to the window of the house and see to see the new baby.

Now that the king has Daniel standing before him, he is confident in what he has heard of Daniel. The king states the things he has heard but in all that he has heard, his focus in on one thing, "You can give interpretations and explain enigmas". The reason Daniel has been summoned.

I can see the king watching Daniel's reaction for each thing he says he has heard of Daniel. Wanting to see if this man will flinch or be shaken. Will he deny what the king has said of him or will he stand confident and firm in his place?

When I am trying to get a matter resolved with the kids. I call them in. The times I start by sharing what I know I am watching their reaction. How they react before saying a word speaks volumes.

Think of a time when you have been summoned. This wasn't the principal's office; this was the king who had summoned Daniel. What was Daniel supposed to do until he knew why the king had called him. Daniel was to wait, listen and hear the king's request.

I wonder what Daniel was thinking when the king says, you can give interpretations and explain enigmas. Now if you can... So, since the king was saying he could do these things then why does he say "if"? I wonder if the king said it in a mocking tone. I wander if he was still distressed and it was almost a plea. It is odd to me that the king would state the reward before services were rendered. Since he is king, wouldn't it be more important that you did what the king requested then what your reward would be?

Have your heard the saying, "desperate times require desperate measures"? I believe the king was desperate. He was still unnerved by what he saw, a man's fingers writing on the wall, no one could read it nor interpret it. He wants to make sure he has the right man in front of him, he wants to know, "Are you the one or do we look for another"?

John the Baptist was in the same desperation. He was in jail and knew it was just a matter of days and he would live no longer on this earth. He sent his disciple to ask Jesus something he already knew to be true. He had called the people to repent of their sins and be baptized. But Jesus was the only one the clouds opened, God spoke and the Holy Spirit ascended upon Him like a dove. John knew who Jesus was. Why did John the Baptist send his disciples to ask, "Are you the one or do we look for another?" I believe John the Baptist knew his time was short but he didn't want to die until he had fulfilled his role to usher in the Messiah. When we are desperate, we need to verify facts we already know to be true. Our mind needs the facts to focus on for stability in our thinking.

The king needed to know this is Daniel, the man who hears from God, interprets enigmas and gives interpretation.

Father, I want to know You in such a way that I can comprehend and understand things people need answers to. I want to hear Your voice and be led by You in my thought. I ask for You to come and minister Your wisdom to me. I pray for understanding. I ask to remember the dreams You give me and the signs of the time. I want to know how to interpret them not for the sake of knowing but do what You want done. I ask for You to speak clearly and give me courage to stand up and share Your Word when I am called upon. I ask for You to bring strength to my inner being. I pray for You to speak to Your people and we would walk in Your ways. I pray we would be prepared to give Your answer for what is going on in the world. I will not be loose with my words. I will speak because I have heard from You. I will not let my tongue rattle on with things that are not of You in Jesus' name amen.
